Erosion Control Efforts in Benue State

The administration of Hyacinth Alia has made erosion and flood control a key component of its infrastructure and environmental management agenda. Recognizing the devastating impact of erosion on communities, farmlands, roads, and public infrastructure, the government has embarked on several intervention projects aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.

One of the major milestones achieved under Governor Alia’s leadership is the support and collaboration with federal agencies on the Idye River Basin Erosion Control and Hydraulic Drainage Project in Makurdi. The project was designed to mitigate perennial flooding and erosion challenges that have affected thousands of residents over the years.

The administration has also initiated the construction and rehabilitation of drainage systems in critical flood-prone areas such as Wurukum Market, North Bank, and Federal Low-Cost Housing Estates in Makurdi. These projects are helping to improve water flow, reduce erosion, and protect roads and residential communities from seasonal flooding.

In 2026, Governor Alia further demonstrated his commitment to environmental sustainability with the commencement of the Wurukum Canal Project, a major drainage infrastructure designed to channel excess rainwater directly into the River Benue and reduce flooding in one of Makurdi’s most vulnerable areas.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the government has taken steps to prevent activities that worsen erosion by enforcing regulations against illegal developments on waterways and drainage channels. These measures are aimed at ensuring long-term environmental protection and sustainable urban development.

Through these strategic interventions, Governor Alia’s administration is addressing erosion challenges, enhancing environmental resilience, safeguarding communities, and creating a safer and more sustainable future for the people of Benue State.
