Education

Since assuming office, Hyacinth Iormem Alia has placed education among the top priorities of his administration, implementing policies and programs aimed at improving access to quality learning across Benue State. His government has undertaken significant reforms designed to strengthen basic, secondary, and tertiary education while creating a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.

One of the administration’s most notable achievements is the recruitment of over 9,700 qualified teachers for public primary schools across the state. This intervention has helped address the shortage of teaching personnel and improve the quality of instruction in classrooms. The recruitment process was widely recognized for its transparency and merit-based approach.

Governor Alia’s administration has also demonstrated a strong commitment to expanding access to education. In 2026, the government declared free education for pupils in public schools from Basic One to Basic Nine, ensuring that children from poor and vulnerable families have greater opportunities to receive quality basic education. The government further launched the BRACE-UP initiative to tackle the challenge of out-of-school children and promote compulsory education throughout the state.

In the area of infrastructure, the administration has embarked on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of numerous schools across Benue State. Several government secondary schools have been renovated, while hundreds of other educational facilities are undergoing reconstruction and upgrading. These efforts are aimed at providing safer and more conducive learning environments for students and teachers.

The Alia administration has also strengthened support for students by paying external examination fees for thousands of candidates sitting for WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB examinations. This initiative has reduced the financial burden on parents and increased opportunities for students to complete their secondary education successfully.

At the tertiary level, the government has worked to stabilize state-owned institutions through the payment of outstanding earned allowances and the promotion of uninterrupted academic activities. The administration has also supported the expansion of higher education through the establishment of new academic programs and the approval of a University of Technology in the state.

Through these interventions, Governor Alia’s administration is laying a stronger foundation for educational excellence in Benue State. By investing in teachers, infrastructure, student welfare, and educational access, the government seeks to equip the younger generation with the knowledge and skills necessary for the state’s future growth and development.
